Matthew, known to everyone as Wills, trained at Clwyd Theatr Cymru and at the School of Sound Recording, Manchester. Wills has designed sound for around 85 productions at Clwyd Theatr Cymru / Theatr Clwyd, including; Wave Me Goodbye (World Premier), The Herbal Bed, Hamlet, Somewhere In England, Sky Hawk (World Premier) Arms & The Man, Copenhagen, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog, Shakespeare's Will (European Premier) Rape Of The Fair Country, As You Like It, Season's Greetings, Aristocrats, The Winslow Boy, Macbeth, Salt, Root & Roe, Educating Rita, As You Like It, Bruised, God of Carnage, Boeing Boeing, Rape of the Fair Country and Memory (London and New York transfer). Other work includes sound design for the new musical, 'The House Of Usher' at The Hope Theatre, London, where he was nominated for an, 'Offie Award' for, 'Best Sound Design'. Other shows include, Carpe Momento¹s production of A Christmas Carol, sound consultant and designer for The Carlisle Christmas Spectacular, narration recordist for the film documentary I Told You I Was Ill: The Life and Legacy of Spike Milligan, for Best FX, ADR recordist for the film, School of the Damned bu Dead Pixel Productions, additional engineering for Colin Towns', Blue Touch Paper's album, Drawing Breath, additional engineering for the track, 'A Cherry Orchard' for Colin Town's Masque Orchestra's album release, 'Drama', engineer for voice overs for many radio adverts, engineer and co-producer of Dog¹s D¹Amour vocalist, Tyla¹s Nocturnal Nomad album, mastering engineer on around 25 of Tyla¹s CD releases and 14 DVD releases for King Outlaw / Cargo Records. He has also worked with a number of independant record labels, including, Stone Me Records, Changes one Records, Desert Inn Records, and Spank Records (which he was the co-founder). Other CD releases include a number of albums from various Welsh Male Voice Choirs and Clwyd Theatr Cymru¹s, ' Music from The Alexander Cordell Trilogy' and 'Brassed Off'.
Recent work includes writing and self publishing a book called, '#AYN2K - All You Need To Know - Dance Studio Edition', both as a hard copy and an eBook.
Wills has recently composed an hour long soundscape for a soon to be opened Escape Room.
In 2013, Wills' sound design work was part of the ASD (Association of Sound Designers) section of the Society of British Theatre Designers exhibition at the V&A Museum, London, celebrating the work of British Sound Designers. His work was also featured in the 2015 / 20116 SBTD theatre exhibition, starting in Nottingham, going to Prague and then again, to the V&A Museum, before touring various venues in the UK. Earlier this year, he created a piece of, 'Sound Art' for the Cities & Memory web site to be included in an project with The London Sound Survey website creating an audio map to celebrate the London Underground.
A piece of Wills' sound design is currently online as part of a large arts exhibition based in Tai Pei.
Wills records and sells sound effect libraries under the name of, WW Audio, and currently has 16 available for sale. More details can be found on the, SFX For Sale page on this site. He also has 4 releases of sound art under the name, 'Caliginous' as well as 3 field recording album releases. All of which can be found on this web site.
Wills also co owns and runs (with his choreographer girlfriend, Rachel, (www.rachelcatherall.co.uk) one of North Wales' most successful dance schools (www.elsberdance.co.uk).
